Comedian Jim Gaffigan had Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager cracking up when he visited the Today show on Friday (Oct. 27).
Kotb and Bush Hager often love asking their guests about their families when they come to visit, but they weren’t expecting Gaffigan’s advice on parenting.
After the comedian admitted that “absolutely everything” about raising teenagers is hard, he launched into an impassioned rant that had the hosts in stitches.
“Parenting is the only thing you can do for 13 years and then it gets super hard. It’s like a cruel joke,” he said. “God is up there watching us and he’s just like, ‘Eh, they probably think they’re pretty good watch this — queue the hormones!'”
Bush Hager then asked if he was a “bad teen” when he was growing up, to which he replied, “I was not, I was perfect. I’m perfect, I’ve never argued with my wife, I’ve never made a mistake,” then quickly added, “I probably was a pain in the ass, all teenagers are.”
But Gaffigan seemed to forget he was on a daytime talk show when Kotb asked how he keeps his kids “in line.”
“I drink alcohol,” he stated, sparking more laughter from the Today hosts. He then turned to the camera and told the viewers, “Hey, good morning everyone, we’re talking about alcohol as a solution.”
Gaffigan shares five kids with his wife of 20 years, actress and comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan. But what’s the key to their happy marriage? You guessed it: alcohol.
“The key is alcohol, once again,” he joked, then added, “I think it’s sucking it up. I think my wife has a dramatic vision problem if she’s married to me.”
That might not be the type of useful advice Kotb and Bush Hager usually tout on daytime television, but they appeared to be having a great time with Gaffigan during Friday’s broadcast.
The comedian was visiting to promote his new comedy tour with Jerry Seinfeld, whom he met when he appeared on Seinfeld’s Netflix talk show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
