Sunny Hostin could not hide her exasperation with Alyssa Farah Griffin when The View returned for its first episode of 2024 this morning.
During a discussion about former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley failing to name slavery as the cause of the Civil War last week, the panel reamed out the presidential hopeful — all except for Griffin, who remained staunch in her support of Haley.
Griffin said she was “dying to respond” to Haley’s gaffe, which she called “wrong, historically inaccurate and … pandering.”
The co-host said Haley’s statement was “unacceptable,” but added, “I’m still supporting her in the primary and here’s why.” Before she could get much further, Hostin protested, “Noooo,” with a pained look on her face. Joy Behar attempted to understand Griffin’s reasoning, telling Hostin, “Her or Trump, she goes for her,” referring to a Haley/Donald Trump faceoff.
Griffin said she agrees with Haley on “historic, generation-defining issues,” before telling the panel, “You guys never have to vote for her, but she is not an existential threat to our democracy.”
Later in the segment, Behar pointed out that Haley has said she would pardon Trump, which only got Hostin more heated about Griffin backing her in the election.
“You can’t support her!” Hostin exclaimed. “You’re rational!”
Griffin wasn’t swayed, though, and replied, “I’m just telling you, I’m worried about him being president. I have rung the alarm bells about this: I am not convinced Joe Biden can beat him, so I want other steps in place.”
Behar was defiant, insisting that Biden will beat Trump, but as she, Hostin and Griffin began to talk over one another, Whoopi Goldberg put out the fire before it could get any more heated in the studio by cutting to commercial break.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
