‘Coco’
It’s Día de Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, and if you’re looking for something to watch to commemorate the holiday, we recommend checking out Pixar’s 2017 film Coco. The animated movie is set during the holiday in a small Mexican town and follows 12-year-old aspiring musician Miguel as he’s accidentally pulled into the Land of the Dead (while he’s still fully alive). There, he intends to find his great-great-grandfather, who he believes to be famed musician Ernesto de la Cruz, so he can get back to the land of the living and reverse his family’s generational ban on music. What Coco accomplishes, balancing a story about death and life with vibrant animation and a respect for the culture it portrays, is nothing short of incredible. With catchy tunes, gorgeous imagery, and an affecting storyline guaranteed to have you crying by its conclusion, Coco is a perfect watch any day, but especially today.
