The Great British Bake Off is getting an American twist thanks to the Roku Channel.
Coming May 5, The Great American Baking Show will show nine amateur bakers battling it out from their cooking stations for a chance to be crowned winner. The new series is a spinoff of the UK’s beloved Great British Bake Off (otherwise known as The Great British Baking Show in the U.S.) that became an international hit after streaming on Netflix.
A new trailer and photos of the Roku series show Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith reuniting as co-hosts, with comedy stars Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry easing the tension as presenters.
“I’m hoping that these bakers will bring something new to the tent,” Leith says in the trailer. “America genuinely is the great melting pot of the world.”
The trailer shows the nine amateur American bakers in the show’s iconic tent, where they’ve been tasked with making everything from gingerbread houses to burgers.
“I expect the Americans will understand what a burger is,” Hollywood says.
Surprisingly enough, not everyone in the tent does. “I have never eaten a hamburger in my life,” one baker admits.
The show is considered a comfort-watch for many, but that doesn’t mean tensions aren’t running high in the tent. In the trailer, Leith doesn’t hold back as she compares one baker’s pastry to concrete, even saying, “Break your teeth on that.”
Roku announced in May 2022 that it will be the new home for the American spinoff series, which previously aired for five seasons on ABC until 2019. This upcoming season will have six episodes, which will be released all at once on May 5.
The show mainly casts “amateur” bakers — meaning they bake as a hobby outside of their day jobs — who regularly manage to wow the judges and viewers with their show-stopping creations. But this season’s cast may just be the best yet.
Hollywood, who has become known on the series as difficult to please, even admits in the trailer, “I think this is by far and away the best group.”
