Home Improvement star Zachery Ty Bryan‘s legal troubles continue.
The former child actor appeared in court on Wednesday (Oct. 25), where he pleaded guilty to felony assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The actor previously faced 19 to 20 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections, but his lawyers cut a deal that required him to undergo just seven days in jail and 36 months of supervised probation. A second count was also dismissed.
Bryan’s attorney, John Kolego, addressed the outcome in a statement to THR.
“Mr. Bryan decided to accept this resolution and admit that he recklessly caused physical injury to his domestic partner to avoid further trauma to his family so they could move on and heal,” Kolego said.
The case pertained to Bryan’s July arrest, in which police responded to an alleged domestic violence dispute between himself and an unidentified woman, who is believed to be his longtime partner Johnnie Faye Cartwright. The couple share three children.
The sentencing also requires Bryan to abide by certain conditions related to the domestic violence case. He must have no contact with the victim without approval from the probation officer. He must also undergo substance abuse treatment and cannot use drugs or alcohol.
Bryan and Cartwright had another domestic dispute in October 2020, which resulted in Bryan getting arrested and charged with harassment, strangulation, and coercion. The charges were later reduced and Bryan pled guilty to misdemeanor menacing and assault. He was also ordered not to have contact with Cartwright.
Cartwright released a statement after Bryan was arrested in July, stating, “I’ll always want what’s best for the father of my children.”
“Trauma can bring struggles in many shapes and forms,” she said. “It’s a horrible situation that’s going to be spun in so many ways. I’ve learned firsthand the truth will never align with what’s been put out there. I ask everyone to please be respectful of our privacy for the sake of the children and our families so the healing process can begin.”
Bryan also addressed his arrest after THR published an investigation into his legal troubles, which also include accusations of financial fraud. He claimed his dispute with Cartwright in October 2020 had been “so blown out of proportion” by the media.
The actor added that he “could’ve fought” the charges he had been facing at the time. “But that’s more stress and drama. I got two misdemeanors and called it a day,” he told the outlet.
