    The first ever adaptation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was The Headless Horseman, a 1922 silent film starring Will Rogers as Ichabod Crane. The horror comedy-drama follows Ichabod Crane as he moved from New York City to Sleepy Hollow to take up a position as schoolteacher. He soon falls for and begins romantically pursuing heiress Katrina Van Tassel (Lois Meredith), even though local Abraham Van Brunt (Ben Hendricks Jr.) has been courting her. With Abraham and additional Sleepy Hollow residents determined to drive him out, Crane may have to contend with both their ire and that of the village’s legendary headless ghost.

  2. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

    This Walt Disney Productions animated anthology film is comprised of two segments, with the second based on Irving’s 1820 Sleepy Hollow short story. Entitled, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, that second segment follows Ichabod Crane (Bing Crosby) as he begins life as the new schoolmaster in Sleepy Hollow, New York, where he is able to win the hearts of local women as well as the respect of his students, even in spite of his slightly odd appearance and behavior.

    Crane forms a rivalry with village bully Brom Bones (Crosby) as they compete for the affections and riches of a beautiful young Dutch woman named Katrina (J. Pat O’Malley Jr.). Though he seems to best Brom in all areas, Crane is swiftly shaken by his growing fear of Sleepy Hollow’s legendary Headless Horseman.

    Jeff Goldblum stars as Ichabod Crane in this 1980 made-for-television adaptation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” When his love interest, Katrina Van Tassel (Meg Foster), shows growing interest in the new schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones (Dick Butkus) attempts to scare off his new rival with frightening tales of the Headless Horseman. Widow Thelma Dumkey (Laura Campbell) also enters the mix as she pursues Brom for herself, creating a fierce love square in the midst of mind-boggling local hauntings.

    This R-rated gothic supernatural horror film from Tim Burton takes place in 1799 and follows New York City police constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) in his investigations of several vicious decapitations in the small upstate hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. With locals convinced that the murders were committed by an undead apparition of a mercenary from the Revolutionary War dubbed the Headless Horseman, the quirky and creative Crane has his work cut out for him. A riveting mystery unfolds with Crane’s love interest, Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), and her family at the center.

    The Hollow is an ABC Family teen horror film that revolves around a high school student named Ian Cranston (Kevin Zegers) who discovers that he is the descendant of Ichabod Crane. With the help of his girlfriend, Karen (Kaley Cuoco), local bully, Brody (Nick Carter), and elderly cemetery caretaker Claus Van Ripper (Stacy Keach), Ian must carry on his family legacy by stopping the newly resurrected Headless Horseman (Ben Scott) from wrecking havoc on Halloween.

    This direct-to-video animated comedy adventure is 22 minutes of Smurf-filled family friendly entertainment that is loosely based on “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Suspicious of Brainy Smurf’s (Fred Armisen) utter dominance in the Smurfberry Harvest contest, Gutsy Smurf (Alan Cumming) sets out on a journey to see how Brainy does it in hopes of preventing the latter’s tenth win in a row. Gutsy’s investigation leads him to the haunted Smurfy Hollow, where the interference of spooky spirits and nefarious presences will force Gutsy to live up to his name and save the day.

With the help of Sheriff’s Lieutenant Abigail Mills (Nicole Beharie), Crane must work to unravel a centuries-old mystery that tethers him and his family to the Headless Horseman and additional powerful supernatural and Biblical forces.
