Walmart’s Mean Girls-inspired Black Friday commercial was certainly fetch, but fans noticed the absence of one notable star.
Rachel McAdams, the actress known for her portrayal of North Shore High School’s primadonna and Plastics leader Regina George, has opened up about why she was missing from the iconic ad, which reunited her fellow Plastics Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners), and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), as well as co-stars Daniel Franzese (Damian) and Rajiv Surendra (Kevin Gnapoor).
“I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest,” she revealed to Variety. “A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag.”
Additionally, she was unaware that everyone else was onboard.
“Also…I didn’t know that everyone was doing it,” she continued. “I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later.”
Lohan, on the other hand, told People that it “was great catching up” with her former co-stars, while Chabert noted that it “was so much fun getting to reminisce and be together again.” Franzese said that it “was great working with old friends again,” adding that it felt “special” to reunite for the campaign.
A movie musical version of the 2004 comedy is hitting theaters next month, with The Sex Lives of College Girls star Reneé Rapp taking on McAdams’ signature role. McAdams told Variety that she and screenwriter Tina Fey — who also acted in and wrote the original film — “sort of dabbled with a few ideas” for McAdams to appear in the new film, but ultimately, they didn’t pan out.
“I was really down for whatever she wanted to do,” she shared. “I think the direction it went in will be fantastic and I cannot wait to see it.”
