Golden Globes Finally Land A Host Just Weeks Before 2024 Ceremony As Jo Koy Accepts Gig Reportedly Turned Down By Multiple Comedians

The Golden Globes has finally found a taker to host its embattled award ceremony mere weeks before its set to take place. While many comedians have reportedly turned down the opportunity, Jo Koy was up for the task, marking his first-ever hosting gig for a major awards show.

In a press release provided to Decider, Koy is said to bring “his unique charm, energy and unpredictable humor” to the whopping three-hour broadcast, which will air on Sunday, Jan. 7.

“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year,” Koy said in a statement, per the press release. “This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!”

The stand-up comedian got his start in 1994 at a Las Vegas comedy club. He later made appearances in two seasons of BET’s ComicView and was a frequent guest on E!’s Chelsea Lately. He also starred in stand-up specials like Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza. Since then, Koy has released several stand-up specials of his own on Netflix, with his most recent being Live From The Los Angeles Forum.

His decision to host the 2024 Golden Globes comes on the heels of reports that other comedians like Chris Rock, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett all turned down their offers to host the ceremony, per CNN. Puck further reported that Beef star Ali Wong also said no, while sources told CNN that four-time co-hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey “would never do it [again].”

Last year, Jerrod Carmichael hosted the annual event — which made its return to broadcast television for the first time in two years after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association became riddled with accusations of racism, corruption and sexual assault. The broadcast earned the second-lowest ratings of all time, with only 6.3 million total viewers.
