Gypsy Rose Blanchard is making headlines again following her release from prison. The 32-year-old was convicted in 2016 for aiding in the murder of her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, but she was recently released on parole.

The murder trial gripped the nation when it revealed that Gypsy had suffered from years of extensive abuse at Dee Dee’s hand. It was believed that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare psychological disorder in which a caregiver seeks attention through those in their care, according to WebMD.

Gypsy spoke openly about the abuse she endured in the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, in which she revealed the shocking lengths her mother went to lie about Gypsy’s health for her own gain.

The documentary is a gruesome and thorough recounting of Gypsy’s troubled childhood and the resulting crime. As director Erin Lee Carr told Rolling Stone, “It’s not for the faint of heart. I still think about it all the time.”

“People thought of us as the sweetest mother-daughter family ever,” Gypsy told Carr in the documentary, later adding, “I went on blind faith that a mother knows best.”

Though it’s an HBO original documentary, Mommy Dead and Dearest is streaming on Hulu for those who have the Max add-on.

The Max add-on can be added to any subscription for an additional $15.99 a month.

However, for those without the add-on or a Hulu subscription, Mommy Dead and Dearest can still be streamed for free on Max.

The Blanchards’ story has also been dramatized for Hulu. Actress Joey King played a young Gypsy in the Hulu series The Act, which is still streaming.

The series stars Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee and Calum Worthy as Nick Godejohn, Gypsy Rose’s then-boyfriend who carried out the crime on her behalf.

Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 without the possibility of parole.
