ESPN has addressed a sticky situation that arose from this year’s Sugar Bowl broadcast from New Orleans.
The network issued an apology for footage aired during Monday night’s (Jan. 1) telecast, which featured a woman flashing one of her breasts amid a crowd of fans gathering on the city’s famous Bourbon Street, per Deadline.
Bill Hofheimer, who is in charge of ESPN’s college sports PR, per the network’s press site, issued the following statement to The Associated Press:”We regret that this happened and apologize that the video aired in the telecast.”
While the act of flashing for beads is certainly customary in New Orleans — particularly during Mardi Gras, which takes place next month — viewers at home may have been surprised.
According to The Wrap, the original clip, which aired during the second half of the game while transitioning out of a commercial, even featured an ad for Allstate, the insurance company sponsoring the annual bowl game.
Nonetheless, the University of Washington Huskies bested the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns, beating them 37-31 at the Caesars Superdome last night.
They will now move on to the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship Game, where they will face off against the University of Michigan Wolverines — the victors of last night’s Rose Bowl — in Houston on Monday, Jan. 8.
