The TLC docuseries Sister Wives has shown a spotlight on polygamy since its debut in 2010 through the lens of Kody Brown and his four wives Christine, Janelle, Meri and Robyn. Between the four women, Kody is a father to 18 children.

However, Kody has had trouble managing healthy relationships among the four individual families in which he serves as patriarch, and has since split from three of his four wives: Christine, Janelle and Meri.

With Kody left with only one wife, Season 18 has served plenty of drama, with Kody questioning if he could ever be in a purely monogamous relationship with his remaining wife, Robyn.

“It’s a weird place to be, where you had this big family and it’s a big thing,” he shared in a confessional during an episode that aired on Sept. 10, per Us Weekly. “And now, we’ve got this small thing going on that’s not unimportant and it is beautiful but it’s not big like this other one. Can I adjust?”

While he also said that he doesn’t want to “sit and identify as a monogamist,” recent events have presented him with quite a challenge. Paedon Brown, one of Christine’s children with Kody, has been questioning if polygamy is right for his family.

“When we first went public, the purpose of going public was to say, ‘Polygamy works,’” he shared in an episode that aired on Aug. 27. “I don’t think it works in my family anymore.”
