When Hannah Waddingham stops by The View, it’s always a good time. The Ted Lasso actress joined the Hot Topics table this morning to promote her Apple TV+ special, Home For Christmas, but also shared plenty of details about her much-missed comedy series and how close she remains with her Ted Lasso co-stars, even after the series wrapped last spring.
Waddingham, who starred on Ted Lasso as Rebecca Welton from 2020-2023, admitted to The View that despite years on the show, she’s not exactly a football expert.
While Ana Navarro thanked Waddingham for “teaching [her] about soccer,” the actress bravely replied, “Can I be honest and say I still know absolutely nothing about football. That was the greatest acting job of my life.”
(Editor’s Note: The View is currently on hiatus; contrary to what you may have heard, The View was not canceled today. This article was originally published on Nov. 13, 2023 when this episode first aired. The View will return with new episodes in January 2024.)
Later in the segment, she assured The View that she and her Ted Lasso co-stars are as tight as ever. In fact, Waddingham recently joined Jason Sudeikis in Kansas City, where she performed in a charity concert, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Waddingham, who was a little hoarse days later, told The View, “As you can hear, it was quite a lot of fun,” she said of performing with Sudeikis at his 7th annual Thundergong! charity event, which took place Nov. 11.
She added, “I decided I was a rock star for the night, hence sounding quite like a drag queen today.”
As for the rest of her Ted Lasso co-stars, Waddingham is very much in touch with them, too. She explained, “All of the Ted Lasso family — we may not be filming, which is a great sadness for all of us. But we are in each other’s phones, we’re in for good, for sure.”
She added, “And we don’t say that to make everyone think it’s some shmaltzy thing. It’s just a fact.”
During Waddingham’s last visit to The View, she explained one of the unlikely reasons why she finds Sudeikis so endearing. The actress, who is 5’11, told The View during a June appearance on the show that she liked working with the SNL alum because he was unbothered by her height.
“Being a woman who’s not small — very tall — I had always struggled,” Waddingham said at the time. “The amount of times they’d be like, ‘We’ve already cast a guy who’s 5’7.’ Whereas when I went into this, Jason was like, ‘I don’t care if she wears four-inch heels. Let’s do it.’”
She added, “That is a completely unique situation to find yourself in — where the man is so generous that they want to raise you up and celebrate everything that you are and not that you’re, like, some skinny-mini.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
