As one Walking Dead ends, another begins. Towards the end of the second hour of the series finale of Fear the Walking Dead, the long-running spinoff of the main series, AMC revealed a new teaser for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, the highly anticipated series that will (hopefully) reunite Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Not only that, we now know the premiere date on AMC and AMC+: February 25.
While that’s over a week past Valentine’s Day, the new teaser featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with Lincoln and Gurira continues to push the epic romance between the two. For those who aren’t aware — or perhaps forgot, since it’s been a while — Rick was presumed dead back in The Walking Dead Season 9. Instead, viewers discovered that he was taken by helicopter to safety by an organization known as the Civic Republic Military, part of an alliance of three civilizations represented by three rings.
We continued to find out more about the Three Rings in the spinoff series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, though didn’t find out much about Rick’s location. Back on The Walking Dead, Michonne — who was married to Rick with two kids — discovered clues to indicate he was not only alive but searching for her. So she left the series as well (and her kids) to find Rick.
That’s where we pick up in The Ones Who Live, as we find out what happened to Rick during the intervening years, and follow Michonne as she searches for her husband. Or as Gurira puts it in the teaser (which you can watch above), “This is some crazy love.”
Here’s AMC’s official synopsis for The Ones Who Live:
“The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is executive produced by Showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Lincoln, Gurira, Denise Huth and Brian Bockrath.”
The series will run six episodes, so presumably with a February 25 premiere date it should wrap up on March 31. We’d also expect it to run in the typical Walking Dead 9 pm ET slot, but that’s also TBA.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live joins a fleet of other Walking Dead spinoff series. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is currently filming its second season in Europe, and should be released sometime next year. The Walking Dead: Dead City has also been picked up for a second season, though filming on the Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) focused series has yet to begin.
So will The Ones Who Live get a Season 2? Will there be more Walking Dead series on AMC and AMC+? Given Daryl Dixon and Dead City have been ratings monsters for the channel, expect there to be more life in this undead franchise for many years to come.
