‘The Brothers Sun’ Ending Explained: Does Bruce Kill Big Sun?

You think your family has issues? Just wait until you see with the Sun family has cooking in the new Netflix action comedy The Brothers Sun.

Created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, the show follows famed killer Charles (Justin Chien) as he returns to Los Angeles, California to protect his family after learning that they are in danger.

But here’s the twist: Eileen “Mama” Sun (Michelle Yeoh) has kept her other son Bruce (Sam Song Li) unaware of the deadly family’s business, allowing him to grow up in a normal environment.

As a result, Bruce is quite naive and has landed himself in his own mess after spending his college tuition on improv classes.

The story develops over eight episodes, and a few unexpected enemies come out of the woodwork. What happens in The Brothers Sun finale? Does the Sun family survive the attack? Does Bruce kill his father? Here’s everything you need to know.

The Brothers Sun Ending Explained

At the top of the last episode, Charles and Mama Sun are upset with Bruce for blowing the cover on their latest plot. But after an intense confrontation in their hotel room, they patch up their differences and come together as a family to move forward. Charles reveals that he wants to stay with Bruce and Mama Sun, and is done doing business with his father.

Big Sun doesn’t take the news well and refuses to give Charles his blessing to leave the gang. The father tells Charles that because he was unable to kill Bruce and Mama Sun, he will send Xing (Jenny Yang) to do so.

Charles sees Xing as she leaves to head to the hotel room, and chases after her. He shoots at her car as she drives away. The action gathers the attention of the police and they arrest Charles. Meanwhile, Mama Sun chokes Xing to death during the attack.

Later, Bruce visits Charles in prison and tells him that he’s going to see their father. The two hug and Charles warns him, “If anything happens goes wrong, you get the fuck out of there. You understand?”

Bruce confronts his father and tells him that Xing is dead. He pulls out a gun and says, Anyway, I came here to do this.” Big Sun smirks and approaches him. “Sons, they either disappoint you or grow too strong and take your place.” He asks Bruce to go to Taiwan with him. “You have so much potential. We can rule Taiwan. You’ll be feared, respected.” Instead, Bruce shoots Big Sun in the stomach and he’s sent to the hospital. 

Mama Sun then appears as his nurse and injects him with insulin, saying it will make him “weak and unable to speak.” She tells him that he will receive a daily dose. Charles is now free to pursue his love for baking, and Bruce has an improv performance. 

Will the family get their happily ever after? It seems unlikely as a post-credit scene shows Big Sun’s right-hand man sitting at a desk and scheming. Is he going to avenge the fallen leader?

The Brothers Sun is currently streaming on Netflix.
