Before there were the quirky weirdos of Stars Hollow, Pawnee and Schitt’s Creek, there were the quirky weirdos of Cicely, Alaska, the town at the heart of the CBS dramedy Northern Exposure, which ran for six seasons between 1990 until 1995.
Since its cancellation, fans have been able to purchase DVDs and digital downloads of the series, but it has never been on a streaming platform … until now.
The show’s premise was about a doctor from New York City, Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), whose medical school student loan agreement unexpectedly contained a stipulation that he take a post as the local physician in the small town of Cicely, Alaska.
Upon his arrival, he meets the town’s many oddball residents, including rugged, adversarial Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner) and ex-con radio DJ Chris Stevens (played by John Corbett in his breakout role), a man who is never without a solid literary reference or record to punctuate a moment. One of the hallmarks of the series was Chris’s radio show, Chris in the Morning; a quick watch of the first few episodes confirms that most, if not all, of the original music has remained intact in the show.
The great ensemble cast also included Barry Corbin, Cynthia Geary, John Cullum, and Elaine Myles, along with notable recurring roles played by Adam Arkin, Valerie Mahaffey, and Graham Greene. Over the course of its run, the series won seven Emmy awards and two Peabody Awards.
