Meryl Streep praised Barbie during a recent appearance at the Palm Springs Film Awards, where Billie Eilish and Finneas accepted an award for their work on the blockbuster’s soundtrack.
The Oscar-winning actress took the stage after Eilish and Finneas accepted the Chairman’s Award. “I just want to say to Billie and Finneas that you have delivered the Barbie love bomb,” Streep said, per Variety. “You’ve saved the movies last summer and all of our jobs.”
She continued, “You’ve delivered joy to countless generations and genders of people, and you should surf that wave, kids, until you’re old and deserve to be jaded like me.”
Barbie grossed $1.4 billion in the international box office. Its box office success made it the most successful release of 2023 and Warner Bros.’s most successful release ever, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Its premiere in July 2023 famously coincided with Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer, which earned its own $952 million in the box office. Their combined box office success affirmed for many that there is still an appetite for unique cinematic stories, much like Tom Cruise‘s Top Gun: Maverick.
Director James Cameron recently shared his own praise during a recent discussion with Greta Gerwig, when he said America Ferrera’s feminist monologue “hit the mark so perfectly.”
“You basically sum up thousands of years of the female dilemma in one minute. I don’t think it’s ever been done as succinctly and hit the mark so perfectly,” he said.
He later added, “If you get too intellectual, you’re going to come up with something that may be quite artistic, but it won’t be heartfelt. The triumph of Barbie is how heartfelt it is.”
Barbie is now streaming on Max.
