There was only one soul brave enough to take on hosting the 2024 Golden Globes — and that was Jo Koy. With the red carpet events in full swing, we can understand if you might be looking for some last-minute information about the host of the evening. Luckily, we have you covered!

Less than one month ago, the Golden Globes announced that they had tapped Koy to bring “his unique charm, energy and unpredictable humor” to the highly-anticipated three-hour broadcast — which is not only the first awards show of 2024, but is also the first celebration since the dual Hollywood strikes ended in the fall. The news of his latest gig followed reports that other comedians like  Chris RockJason BatemanSean Hayes and Will Arnett all turned down the opportunity to host the event.

“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year,” Koy said in a statement, per a press release provided to Decider. “This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!”

Without further ado, here’s everything we know about Jo Koy:

Who is Jo Koy?

Koy got his start performing standup comedy at a Las Vegas coffee house in the mid-1990s. He went on to star in standup specials like Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza, as well as television shows like BET’s ComicView and E!’s Chelsea Lately — which was hosted by Chelsea Handler, whom he dated briefly from 2021 to 2022.

Moreover, the 52-year-old comedian has performed on several late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where he received a standing ovation from the audience.

In 2017, Koy broke a record for the most tickets sold by a single artist at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, prompting the Honolulu Mayor’s Office to declare Nov. 24 as “Jo Koy Day,” according to the comedian’s website. The following year, he won the award for Stand-Up Comedian Of The Year at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

Most, however, would recognize Koy from his four successful Netflix specials. Keep reading for more information.
